One of the fastest, cheapest, and most effective ways to kick a case of the blues is to head outdoors and Walk it off! At least one half hour of brisk walking can help blow out the cobwebs. Now, if we´re talking about full blown depression, and not just the blues (you know the difference girl!) talk it out with your doctor. But if you´re just feeling low, walking is a proven remedy that just also happens to shape your fanny and calves too!
Poet and author Sylvia Plath once said, "There may be quite a few things a hot bath won´t cure, but I don´t know many of them." So heed her advice and de-stress by soaking in the tub for at least 20 minutes. Add your favorite oils or bubbles, grab a good book, hair up and lean back. Let the day´s stress float right down the drain!
A Welsh walking guide, Basil Evans, even suggested smearing Vasoline over the entire foot prior to putting on socks. It helps prevent chafing. A little sprinkle of baby powder on top of the Vasoline can also help prevent blisters and callouses.
Alas, we single girls eat alone many a night. If, heaven forbid, you choke on your food and need to have the Heimlich maneuver performed, you can help yourself! Here are a couple of ways you might want to remember: 1) Lean over the back of a chair and press forcefully to pop out the food. 2) Do abdominal thrusts on yourself: a) Make a fist with one hand. Place the thumb side of your fist against your abdomen, just below your navel. b) Grasp your fist with the other hand. Give a quick upward thrust into your abdomen. This may cause the food to pop out. c) Repeat thrusts until the food pops out. Be prepared for the uneventful and unexpected!
If you´re prone to rough, calloused, and cracked heels try applying petroleum jelly to your feet (don´t be stingy now, pack it on) and then slip on white socks. You can try this at night before going to bed, or even before treking out on a long hike. It really helps keep your feet smooth and soft!
Pack a blister protector such as "Second Skin" or Band-Aid`s new blister strips. If you should develop a blister along your journey, these little strips will provide a cushion to help lessen the irritation. Why let your day be spoiled?
When they ask if you want to "supersize" that soft drink, just say NO! Those Big Daddy soft drinks will cost you about 550 calories compared to 160 for a regular 12-oz drink. And think about this...if you replace one regular soda a day with water, you could potentially lose 17 pounds worth of calories a year!
Keep your telephone on a bedside table when going to bed each night. Avoid stumbling or falling in the dark if someone calls in the middle of the night!
Want a quick and inexpensive facelift? Just cleanse your face thoroughly and then brush on egg whites. Let dry, then cleanse again. You´ll look, temporarily at least, younger and fresher!
Sure, you`re fit AND gorgeous, but why take chances? Training for and running a marathon taxes your joints and more importantly, your auto-immune system so be sure to talk to your doc before embarking on this incredibly lofty goal.
Studies have indicated that people with pets are included in the "happier" categories of the general population. Caring for another living creature helps take the focus off ourselves and helps us transfer love
and attention to something else. Plus, the animal
gives us love right back. If you live in an apartment,
think about getting a bird or another small animal.
Regardless of risk, experts advise performing breast self-exams once or twice a month. Remember: 1)Use the pads of your fingertips 2)Cover the entire breast area in a pattern of circles.
Do you, single girl, wonder why-oh-why, could
something that makes us look and feel as good as
tanning be so bad for you? As always, knowledge is
power so here's how to know if you have a higher risk
for melanoma:
1) You have a lot of moles or freckles, are fair skinnehave light-colored eyes and have red or blond hair.
2) You have a family history of melanoma.
3) You have a history of severe sunburn occurring in early childhood.
4) You experience intermittent sun exposure. Chronic sun exposure may actually protect the skin because it's grown thicker through tanning.
Do you have a weight or excercise goal that seems
out of reach on your own? Team up with a friend and
assign one health goal for each other each week for at least 9 weeks.
For example, I challenged my best friend to attend at
least three classes at her health club within the next
week. Any class of her choice: weights, yoga,
step...whatever her heart desires. I, on the other
hand, have been assigned the wretched task of laying
off the Cheetoes for an entire week! (Why is mine so
much harder?) Agreeing to be accountable to ourselves
and someone else often makes it easier to reach our goals!
Another tip for avoiding blisters is to make sure that your feet stay dry during your walk. Purchase waterproofing spray and treat your boots a couple of times before heading out on the trails. Pack a couple of extra pair of socks in your backpack for changes in case your socks become wet due to rain, mud puddles, or even plain old sweat!
