Stay Alert

When shopping at night, running alone, and for personal safety in general, always stay alert and TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS. If you think you are in danger, don´t assume that it´s just your imagination. Get yourself to a safe, populated, and well-lit place immediately. If anything suspicious occurs, call the police.

First Date Safety

You should always drive yourself (or take a cab, public bus) to your agreed upon (public) date site. Don´t have your date pick you up at your home until you are sure you´re in safe "hands". Overly cautious? Maybe. But I´d rather risk hurting my date´s feeling (on that first date) than potentially risk my safety.

Phone Book Listing

If your phone is in your name and it is not an unlisted number, consider having your name listed in the phone book with just your first initial instead of your full name. Or add a male name to the listing. It never hurts to take an extra precaution that can protect you from people who prey on single women.

What can I do to stay safe in the car?

Auto Safety

When driving alone, never lay your handbag in the passenger or back seat. Always place it on the floorboard or in the trunk and keep your car doors locked. This prevents someone from easily reaching in and grabbing your purse.

Get a Rechargeable Flashlight

Keep a flashlight where you can always find it and stock batteries. There are rechargeable flashllights which you keep plugged in all the time, they double as a night light in the evening.

As a back up have candles and matches too. When the power goes out you will know where to find a source of light without stumbling around a lot first.

Pocket Your Keys

Have one place in your purse, a side pocket or an inside one, where you always put your car and home keys.

Get into the habit of returning the keys right back to their pocket as soon as you get in the doorway or sit inside the car. This way you know where they are and are less likely to accidentally leave them in the door, or anything else you will regret later when you have to call the auto club to rescue you cause the keys are locked inside the car.
